Harry and Meghan warned to ‘stay away’ from Coronation following Netflix drama
Harry and Meghan have been given a clear warning by political grandees and royal historians – do not attend King Charles’ coronation.
After the release of their explosive Netflix documentary earlier this week, a number of prominent figures now believe the couple should no longer be allowed to attend the Coronation on May 6.
Tory veteran David Mellor told the Mail: ‘They shouldn’t come to the Coronation. They categorically shouldn’t come.
‘They make money out of selling their family down the river. I think it should be made clear that the British people do not want them there.’
He also suggested that people ‘would be perfectly entitled to boo if the couple did turn up’, adding: ‘They are a sad pair and there is no hope for them on their current course.’
His views were echoed by former Conservative party leader Iain Duncan Smith, who asked why the couple would even be interested in attending the Coronation ‘if they dislike the Royal Family so much.’
Meanwhile, royal historian Lady Antonia Fraser said she hopes the couple stay at home so they don’t draw attention away from King Charles and Camilla, the Queen Consort.
‘It worries me that if they come the cameras might waste time on them. They should stay holding hands in Hollywood,’ Fraser said.
The scathing criticism comes just days after the first three episodes of their widely-anticipated docu-series were released.
The series included claims the Royals held an ‘unconscious bias’ around Markle’s race and never accepted her as part of the family.
Harry also took shots at his brother and claimed Prince William did not marry Kate Middleton out of love, but because she fit the royal image well.
Elsewhere in the doc was Harry’s admission that King Charles did not adequately care for him following the death of his mother, as well as a dismissal of the Commonwealth of ‘Empire 2.0’.
Yet despite the backlash, the official line from the palace is that Meghan, Harry and their children are ‘much-loved’ members of the family, and will almost certainly be invited to the Coronation.
Dai Davies, former head of royal protection, said the allegations made by the couple could pose a security risk to serving members of the Royal Family.
‘We don’t know what poison will come out next, but when considering what has been said, be it half-truth, lie or mockery of the Royal Family, how can anyone want them to be invited to the Coronation?” he told the newspaper.
‘The presentation of the monarchy and the Commonwealth as being racist is an insult to Britain and Britons,’ he said.
‘The false narrative presented in this series could give rise to people with a fixation on the Royal Family to enact their fantasies.’
In a statement issued following the release of the documentary, Harry and Meghan said: ‘We are grateful to have the ability to share our love story through such an esteemed creative team and with the global reach of Netflix,.’
‘We hope it helps others to heal, and to feel inspired.’
Their views were echoed by director Liz Garbus, who added: ‘I hope that when Netflix viewers press play, whatever preconceptions people have, they will be open to the discovery of what we’ve shared in this documentary series.’
