The guwahati municipal corporation has installed cctv cameras to keep a watch on people throwing garbage into the river channels which choke in the rainy season, resulting in floods. The commissioner, megha nidhi dahal, said that solarpowered cctv cameras have been installed at 10 locations on the banks of the bahini river channel which flows from the basistha side through thickly inhabited localities of the city like rukminigaon and beltola before joining the bharalu near assam state zoo. He added that the locations for the placement of the cctvs have been selected on a priority basis. “Heavy encroachment and practice of throwing garbage in the bahini have been detected in many locations, repeated appeals have been made to the people but to no avail. The civic body desilts the drains and the river channels every year,” he added. The civic body removed around 1 lakh cubic metres of plastic waste and silt from the five river channels and 575 drains of the city between december last year till march this year. This year too, the gmc has been carrying out desilting of the drains and river channels on a war footing and has targeted to clear 800 km
