‘Why do I have to answer’ – Conte unimpressed with question on Harry Kane’s future
Antonio Conte has hit back at the media when asked about how Tottenham’s current form has affected Harry Kane’s future at the club.
It was only a couple of months ago that reports indicated Tottenham were confident that Kane would put pen to paper on a new contract (Ben Jacobs).
However, things have changed dramatically since then, with Conte’s project at the club now in very real danger of ending in disappointment.
The Telegraph claimed earlier this week that Kane could be on his way out of Spurs at the end of the season since the striker will only have 12 months left on his contract in the summer.
The publication asserted that Daniel Levy would be willing to sell the 29-year-old for £100m to a Premier League rival and could even be prepared to accept a lower fee from a foreign club.
However, Conte did not take kindly to being asked about the striker’s future, accusing the journalist who put the question to him of trying to damage his relationship with the Spurs hierarchy.
When asked about how Kane was feeling amidst the current malaise at Tottenham, with his contract now running down, the Italian told Football.London: “When we organise the press conference with the club [hierarchy], you can ask that.
“You can put this question to the club, OK. Keep this question for the future and I hope for you it happens one day that you can make this question to the club.
“Why do I have to answer this question? It’s not disrespectful from you but I repeat: we are always telling you the same thing.
“Why do I have to answer a difficult question? You try with this question to put me in difficulty with the club and with the environment. Why? Why? Why do I have to answer? I’m really polite, believe me.
“I’m a kind person but at the same time, I hope you understand me. I don’t want to create a problem. I always said I liked the way we’re working here and what we’re doing, and stop, because in the past I think I said a lot.”

I do not blame Conte for reacting in this manner as several journalists (even reputable ones) have reported many of his quotes without the appropriate context over recent months, which has led to some unnecessary backlash.
I would advise Spurs fans to always watch the press conference on YouTube rather than just reading the quotes so that they get the tone of Conte’s answers and the context of the question he is actually responding to.
