Mangalore's Women's Industrial Training Institute (WITI) has been able to generate Rs. 79 lakh in revenue from 2009-2018 by offering various short-term and long-term job-oriented courses. The WITI in Mangaluru has been offering two long-term courses and half a dozen short-term courses to nearly 750 candidates. The courses are now being offered in various firms across the globe. A former principal of the WITI, Balakrishna, told TOI that the center came up with the scheme in 2008, under this government, and disbursed an interest-free loan of Rs. 25 crore to each WITI. The objective of the scheme was to upgrade the institutes as the infrastructure and quality of training in these institutes did not meet the requirements of the fast-growing economy. An industry partner was required to lead the upgrade process, and an institute management committee was constituted in the WITI and registered as a society. The loan was repayable by the management committee with a moratorium of 10 years and thereafter, in equal annual installments, over a period of 20 years.
