Embassy: Japan to continue demanding Russian advice on fishing in Kuril area
Tokyo has received a notice from Moscow that the Russian side is unable to agree on a timetable for consultations on fishing for Japanese fishermen in the waters around the Kuril Islands. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the Japanese Embassy in Moscow.
The diplomatic mission reported that a notice was received from Russia on January 19 that Moscow cannot agree on the timing of annual intergovernmental consultations on issues related to the implementation of an agreement on cooperation in the field of fishing of marine living resources.
The embassy also said that for more than 20 years since its conclusion, Russia and Moscow have supported fishing in the waters around the southern islands of the Kuril Ridge.
“The Japanese side continues to urge early annual consultations and negotiations on the implementation of the agreement to ensure that fishing can be carried out as early as possible in 2023,” the embassy stressed.
In June, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow had suspended implementation of the agreement with Tokyo on fishing for marine living resources.
The agreement allowed Japanese fishermen to fish within the quota allocated by Russia off the southern Kuril Islands.
