Report: Lyon could make move for Spurs 22-year-old to replace first-team star

According to the Daily Mail, French side Lyon may look to replace reported Chelsea target Malo Gusto by making a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence.

Despite signing for Tottenham in the summer for a fee believed to be around £20 million (Sky Sports) and bringing with him a lot of potential, Spence has been unable to establish himself in Antonio Conte’s side.

In fact, the 22-year-old has just six appearances to his name this season, amassing a total of 41 minutes on the pitch for Spurs (Transfermarkt). Spence’s lack of game time is something of a mystery and frustration among the fanbase, who are eager to see the young wing-back in action.

Michael Bridge told Sky Sports Football Daily that Spence could leave Spurs towards the end of this month in order for the Lilywhites to make space for a new wing-back. There is seemingly no shortage of teams keen to take Spence off the hands of Conte, either.

The Daily Mirror reported on January 8 that Premier League clubs Wolves, Southampton, and Brentford were all interested in signing Spence. Now, it sounds like they will have to compete with Ligue 1 side Lyon, who have their eyes on the talented defender.

Lyon could be set to lose their own dynamic wing-back, as Malo Gusto attracts attention from free-spending Chelsea. Should Gusto make the switch to West London, the Daily Mail suggests they could make a move for Spence to replace him.

There are a lot of moving parts here, but should Chelsea start that chain reaction, we may well see Spence shipped out on loan to France, which could then potentially make way for Pedro Porro to come to Spurs. It would be a shame to see Spence leave, albeit temporarily, but he needs to be playing first team football regardless of whether that’s in a Spurs shirt or not.
