The state highways department has started demolishing the commercial complex on platform 1 of the ukkadam bus terminal for construction of a ramp to provide access to the ukkadamathupalam flyover which is under construction. The work to demolish the complex where some shops including bakeries and eateries functioned started on Monday morning, and the demolition process will be completed on Tuesday. An official said "the area was cordoned off to keep passengers and vehicles away to ensure safety police personnel were deployed to keep people away from the demolition site which is congested, and adequate men and machines were deployed to finish the work at the earliest." "Ramp construction will be started without any delay," the official added. The project, which was initially taken up at a cost of 280 crore, will have four lanes. Although there was no provision for the ramp in the initial design, it was added after commuters demanded it. The demolition work caused traffic congestion in and around the bus terminal, and vehicular movement was hit on sungam bypass road, palakkad road, and perur road.
