Strange weather sees Scottish Highlands warmer than southern England
Unusual weather has ‘flipped the norm’ by leaving parts of northern Scotland warmer than southern England, the Met Office has said.
An overnight low of -8.6C was recorded yesterday in Benson, Oxfordshire, while a comparatively balmy 10.6C was registered at Altnaharra in the Highlands.
The Met Office said higher pressure to the east is keeping it cold in the south with air from the continent, but low pressure further north has allowed westerly winds to bring milder air in from the Atlantic.
Spokesman Oli Claydon said: ‘It’s relatively unusual – we obviously expect it to be the other way around, especially at this time of year, but, due to the position of high and low pressure around the UK, it’s flipped the norm.’
He said temperatures will ‘start to even out’ today with 7C or 8C ‘across the board’ by tomorrow.
Meanwhile, a rare ice disk, which usually occur in very cold oceans and lakes, has been spotted in the Highlands.
Hiker Dan Brown, 32, was in a glen on the mountain of Beinn Bhuidhe near Loch Fyne with his father when they came across it at a waterfall earlier this month.
He said: ‘Neither of us had ever seen anything like it, a perfect circle of ice slowly rotating in the water.’
