FIFA suspends Sri Lanka after government changes rules and meddles in elections
January 25 – FIFA has suspended the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) over political interference after the federation’s presidential elections fell short of Zurich’s standards.
The Ministry of Sports introduced a raft of regulations that reportedly compromised the autonomy and independence of national sports bodies, including the FFSL.
The amendments to regulation reportedly prevented those above 70 years of age, those who have held the office of president twice in a row,
