Detained Afghan National Dies in a Pakistani Jail

A 60-year-old Afghan national died in Landhi Jail in Karachi, who was suffering from a server illness while in prison, local sources reported on Saturday.  

As per the details, the Afghan citizen named Faiz Muhammad and was arrested last month by Karachi police for failing to provide legal residence documents.

The prison officials have confirmed the death of the detained Afghan citizen, and have already informed the Afghan Council General in Karachi. The sources said the prisoner was suffering from a severe illness during her time in Prison.

Earlier in the week, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested five Afghan citizens from Peshawar airport during the immigration process. The Afghan citizens were all set to board an international flight to London on fake Afghan passports.

The arrested citizens were handed over to an anti-human trafficking cell for further investigations.

The incarceration of Afghan nationals has increased across Pakistan over the past months. Following the rise in terrorism and militancy in the country, the country’s law enforcement agencies have taken serious measures to deal with those foreign nationals including Afghans who fail to provide legal residence permits.

Over the past months, Pakistan police has detained hundreds of undocumented Afghan citizens including women and children, which prompted widespread condemnations within Pakistan and beyond. Furthermore, Pakistani authorities have forcefully deported hundreds of Afghan refugees over the past months.

Since the return of the Taliban to power in August 2021, thousands of Afghans migrated to Pakistan mostly through Torkham and Chaman crossing points. Most of these people entered Pakistan without visas and passports, now facing serious problems in the host country.

Pakistan authorities have repeatedly announced that undocumented Afghan nationals will be incarcerated and forcefully deported to Afghanistan.
