Blast in Afghanistan’s Mazar-e-Sharif Kills Provincial Governor and 2 Others
An explosion took place in northern Mazar-e-Sharif province on Thursday morning, claiming the life of the provincial governor and his two security guards, according to local sources.
According to sources, a brutal attack took place in the premises of the provincial governor’s office around 10 am on Thursday morning, as a result of which four people including Mohammad Dawood Muzammil, the governor of Balkh province were killed.
The province’s Taliban police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri confirmed the death of the provincial governor and his two security guards and said that two other people were wounded in the attack.
Waziri said that the terror attack took place during an administrative meeting, and the cause of the explosion was not immediately known as no one or group has claimed the responsibility so far.
This comes as another explosion occurred in provincial district five in Kabul city earlier today, with no further details about casualties and type of the explosion.
Despite the Islamic Emirate authorities have repeatedly claimed that the war is over in Afghanistan, security still remains a major challenge for the de facto regime. Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) militant group has launched brutal attacks in the capital Kabul and other provinces, since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
Over the past year, the militant group has targeted foreign embassies, a diplomatic mission, a Chinese-run hotel, and educational institutions in the heart of Kabul, which resulted in the death and injury of scores of innocent civilians.
