Independence day for young athletes
Last weekend we had three young athletes representing their districts in the national finals of the Independent schools cross country championships, which took place in Worksop. Anna and Sarah Yates ran in the year 10/11 girls, both finishing well with Sarah taking an impressive 5th place and Anna 19th.
In the year 7 girls, Hattie Loughrey, in her 1st year of competition finished a decent 31st from a field of 53. This is even more pleasing as Hattie only joined LPS in Autumn and is starting to really enjoy the running.
Well done to all three girls and on to the next two weekends when the Yates ladies will be representing Lancashire in the inter-counties and in the English Schools finals.
Staying with our “pocket rockets”, a big shout out to Matthew Bennet and Harrison Wright who both achieved personal bests in 5k events. Matthew completed the Halewood 5k in 19:17 and Harrison 19:55 at Southport Parkrun. Thanks to friends at Kirkby Milers for the photo of Matthew in full flight below.
On the “senior front”, Lisa Gawthorne continued her dominance of the ladies section of the Halewood 5k with a strong 18:24 performance, which was not only her course record but also her PB.
Kirsty Longley, representing the North of England came home 1st V45 female in the Trafford 10k with a time of 34:23. She was followed by Mark Wynne, who finished 15th V45 male in a time of 35:35, both good performances in a high quality race.
Closer to home, Se Loughlin took part in the St Helens 10k and finished comfortably in 4th place overall (32:51) in what was a close race between 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions.
