Doctor Confirms Texas Abortion Ban Allows Medical Care for Women, Just Not Killing Babies

A Texas OB-GYN who has been practicing for nearly 30 years said the pro-life laws in her state protect both mothers and babies, contrary to abortion activists’ claims.

Dr. Ingrid Skop, an OB-GYN and senior fellow and director of medical affairs at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, said she has been sad to see more reports of pregnant mothers not receiving critical medical care supposedly because of the abortion ban.

It’s lies about the abortion bans, not the laws themselves, that are putting women’s lives at risk, she said.

“Under the laws of Texas and all other pro-life states, doctors are advised to exercise their reasonable medical judgment to determine if a woman needs to be delivered of her unborn child in order to protect her life,” Skop explained. “Texas law allows this intervention and does not require delay in necessary care for ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage or a life-threatening complication.”

She and many others, including doctors, attorneys general and pro-life leaders, have been explaining this for months. They emphasize that all pro-life laws protect mothers as well as unborn babies by allowing pregnant women to receive essential medical care for ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages and other cases when their lives are at risk.

“Yet no matter how many times we correct the record, pro-abortion activists continue spreading misinformation, confusing physicians and the general public,” Skop said. “These rhetorical games put women’s lives at risk and need to stop.”

Abortion activists have not been offering any suggestions to amend the laws to make them more clear either. Instead, Skop said their only solution is legalizing “abortion on demand until birth, which is wildly out of step with most Americans.”

Earlier this week, five Texas women sued the state after they say doctors refused to treat them for life-threatening conditions while pregnant because of the Texas Human Life Protection Act, which bans all elective abortions.

The lawsuit, led by the Center for Reproductive Rights, asks a judge to clarify that the law allows exceptions when the mother’s life is at risk.

But Skop and other experts say the Texas law is clear. State Attorney General Ken Paxton has issued several statements to explain that doctors can and should act to save pregnant mothers’ lives.

The Texas pro-life law defines abortion as “the act of using or prescribing an instrument, a drug, a medicine, or any other substance, device, or means with the intent to cause the death of an unborn child.” The law also “protects women facing life-threatening physical conditions resulting from pregnancy complications,” Paxton said in a July 2022 statement.

Earlier this week, Paxton’s office reiterated that he is “committed to doing everything in his power to protect mothers, families, and unborn children, and he will continue to defend and enforce the laws duly enacted by the Texas Legislature.”

Pro-life laws save unborn babies’ lives and protect mothers. Every abortion restriction includes clear exceptions that allow miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy care as well as abortions in the rare cases when a mother’s life is at risk. Many doctors, legal analyses and experts confirm this, but abortion activists’ lies persist.

The Texas abortion ban, for example, permits abortions when “in the exercise of reasonable medical judgment, the pregnant female on whom the abortion is performed, induced, or attempted has a life-threatening physical condition aggravated by, caused by, or arising from a pregnancy that places the female at risk of death or poses a serious risk of substantial impairment of a major bodily function unless the abortion is performed or induced.”

The law also states, “Medical treatment provided to the pregnant female by a licensed physician that results in the accidental or unintentional injury or death of the unborn child does not constitute a violation of this section.”

Other doctors, including a Planned Parenthood abortionist, also have confirmed that pro-life laws allow treatment for ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages and situations where the mother’s life is at risk.
