Restrictions, Isolating Afghan Women and Girls Should be Lifted: UN
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan asked the Taliban authorities to reverse the restrictions on women’s education and work, which are in conflict with human rights mandates.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8, the United Nations once more provided a report highlighting the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan and expressed its support for Afghan women and girls.
Roza Otunbayeva Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expressed her concerns about the situation of women and girls in the county and stated the continuation of the existing situation in Afghanistan will lead to the isolation of this country.
UNAMA Chief Roza Otunbayeva described the restrictions on women and girls as major humanitarian and economic crises in the world and corrected that it is not only ‘self-harm’ for women, but also for all Afghans.
Furthermore, UNAMA in a statement said, “Taliban have been practicing a self-centric policy, which has effectively trapped most women and girls in their homes, with no prospect, no hope and no future.”
Meanwhile, the head of UNAMA has talked at the UN Security Council, and shed light on the current situation in Afghanistan.
Alison Davidian, UN Women special representative in Afghanistan has said, “Afghan women have shown incredible courage and resilience in the face of continuous and systematic cleansing.”
Alison further added, in order to build a peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive Afghanistan, the absolute rights of women and girls should be restored.
This comes as the European Union sanctioned two Acting Ministers of the Islamic Emirate in the recent past, who are believed to have played significant roles in restricting the rights of women to education and work.
