Several Journalists Injured in Blast in Afghanistan’s Balkh Province
Police reported that a blast occurred in Balkh, the provincial capital of northern Afghanistan, on Saturday, days after the province’s governor was killed in an explosion claimed by the Islamic State.
“A blast has taken placed in the second police district of Balkh,” said Mohamad Asif Waziri, Balkh’s police spokesperson. “We will share details later.” He said the authorities did not expect many casualties but were investigating.
A journalist based in Balkh, Mohammad Fardin Nowrozi, told Reuters he and several other journalists were injured in the explosion but did not provide further details.
The explosion came after the Taliban governor of the northern Afghan province of Balkh and two other people were killed in a suicide attack on Thursday.
Recently, the IS-Khorasan has intensified its attacks in the country, aiming to target Taliban officials, foreign nationals, and people.
In addition, Afghanistan Freedom Front claimed responsibility for an attack on Friday late evening in Kabul that killed three and wounded four members of the Taliban, the group said in a statement.
Since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, the radical Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K) organisation has ferociously targeted Kabul, the provincial capital, and other locations. Despite the claims by the Taliban-led government that the conflict has been resolved, the de facto government still faces tremendous security challenges in the country.
