PEOPLE are only just realising they have been pronouncing the name of iconic make-up brand NYX all wrong.
NYX Professional Makeup is named after the Greek goddess of the night – but it’s not it’s namesake that has people talking.
The company has now confirmed how to pronounce the moniker after years of confusion.
Popular pronunciations are spelling out the letters or saying it like ‘nikes’.
But both of these are wrong.
Taking to Instagram, the company put an end to decades of debate and revealed that the pronunciation is much simpler.
It turns out, NYX is pronounced ‘nix’ – exactly how the Greek goddess’ name is.
The brand posted a screenshot from its Twitter account which read: “It’s pronounced ‘NIX’ not ‘N-Y-X’ or ‘NIKES’.”
The social media team comically penned in the caption: “We have something to get off our chest real quick.”
Beauty buffs flocked to the comments with mixed responses to the news.
Some were shocked that the pronunciation debate is still ongoing given that the make-up brand was founded in 1999.
But most of the shock was directed at people who say ‘nikes’, with one person writing: “Whoever is saying ‘nikes’ needs a hug.”
A second echoed: “‘Nikes’ is sending me. People really called it that?”
Another person said: “I know it’s ‘nix’ but I still say ‘N-Y-X’ because I don’t know, maybe I’m a little nuts.”
A fourth chimed in: “Every brand should post how to spell their name.”
NYX has previously been voted the best high street make-up brand in the world.
In the UK, it is most popularly stocked in Boots and on beauty websites like Cult Beauty and Lookfantastic.
More recently, it is stocked in the UK’s first Sephora store which opened earlier this month.
A blurb on the NYX website reads: “Our brand was born, with love, in LA.
