Two stolen horses and one teenage rider dead after car hits them
A teenager was killed and two more injured after a car hit a group of teenagers riding stolen horses.
Early on Tuesday morning, three teenage horse thieves broke into a ranch in Dallas, Texas and stole three prize racehorses, the Dallas Police Department said.
The wannabe livestock rustlers took off on horseback in the early morning hours, before they were struck by a car on the Great Trinity Forest and Julius Schepps Freeway around 5.30am.
None of the teenage suspects have been named. One of the thieves, a 14-year-old, was killed at the scene. The other two riders, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old, were hospitalized and are now recovering.
The Dallas Police Department confirmed that the driver is not expected to face charges for the incident.
The horses were stolen from Memory Lane Stable and Track in Dallas, WFAA reported. The stable’s owner, Lorenza Gooch, said said the incident left him ‘heartbroken’ and ‘speechless.’
Gooch said that heard about the theft by watching a news report. ‘When they showed the horse loaded on the trailer, I knew that was my horse. I could tell by the look of the horse,’ he told the local station.
One of the stolen horses was killed immediately in the crash, while another was euthanized at the scene by a veterinarian due to the severity of its injuries. Their names were Belle Wind Up and Waco Sassy Kid.
The third horse, named Logo Winner, survived but sustained injuries in the crash.
Gooch said the horse thieves brought their own saddles to the stables on Tuesday morning. The stolen horses were trained to pull racing buggies, and had never been ridden before that night.
It is unclear if the teenage suspects will be charged. Dallas Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
