Report: Spurs were keen on striker who joined Chelsea in January
The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur tried to sign Jimmy-Jay Morgan from Southampton only to be beaten by Chelsea to the youngster’s signature.
Morgan had been with Southampton since the age of 11 and had established a reputation as being one of the prime jewels of the St Mary’s academy set up over the last few years as he made his way through the age group ranks.
The versatile forward, who can play across the front three, has scored four goals and provided five assists in just eight appearances in Premier League 2 this season (Transfermarkt).
The Athletic explain that Spurs showed interest in the 17-year-old last summer as did Leeds United but the Saints batted off advances from those clubs.
The report adds that the two clubs continued to monitor Morgan’s performances this season but it was Chelsea who sunk the defining blow for the teenager after sealing a deal worth an initial £3million.
It is revealed that the Blues were helped by the fact that the forward was in their academy from the age of eight to 11, and was keen to return to Cobham, having previously enjoyed his time at the club.

Jimmy-Jay Morgan was seemingly looked at by many as the best young player in Saints’ academy ranks, which is certainly high praise, considering the quality of the youth set-up at the south coast club.
It does look like Tottenham might have missed out on a real gem, and will hope the likes of Jamie Donley can follow the same path of Harry Kane instead.
