Designer says she’s made the perfect party dress but everyone’s saying the same thing and it’s NOT a vibe they’re after
A FASHION designer who claimed she’s created the perfect dress “to feel like a princess” has been struck with an interesting comparison.
Alie Mackintosh designed a teal maxi dress that she dubbed “perfect for parties and special occasions”.
But eagle-eyed television fans have spotted that the dress looks like what the wives in The Handmaid’s Tale wear.
One said: “It’s giving wife from The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Another called Macintosh a “dupe” for Serena Joy, a major character in the series.
The drama science fiction show is based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel.
The story is set in a dystopian future where a totalitarian regime has overthrown the US government and created the Republic of Gilead.
Handmaid’s are used to battle infertility, with high-ranking men impregnating them so that their wives – who are unable to conceive – can raise the children.
Mackintosh’s dress, it is said, looks like that of the wives due to its silhouette and teal colour.
Dubbed the Ava Reversible Maxi Dress, it costs £139 through the English designer’s fashion label, AYM.
After promoting the dress on Tik Tok, people rushed to make the comparison.
Mackintosh said she feels like she needs to watch the series after seeing the comments.
She added that she has received similar comments on a few different posts promoting her dresses.
One reads: “I don’t know if maybe it’s just me, but ever since The Handmaid’s Tale came out, it kinda just ruined me on this specific colour and style of dress.”
Another says: “This gives The Handmaid’s Tale, very commander’s wife chic.”
A blurb on the website describes the teal maxi dress as “an exquisite maxi dress with flutter sleeves, a floaty skirt, and corset style lace-up waist for an adjustable fit”.
It adds: “The double layered fabric ensures complete protection from sheerness.
“Enjoy perfect fit and superior comfort with this timeless piece.”
Thanks to the dress being reversible, fashionistas don’t have to worry about always emulating a commander’s wife.
Wearing it the other side shows cleavage and creates a V-shaped neckline.
Other shoppers beamed that they loved the dress, with many saying they put their orders in straight after seeing Alie’s video.
