National League players could go on STRIKE over ‘disgraceful’ contract changes

PLAYERS in the National League could be set to go on STRIKE.

That’s due to “disgraceful” upcoming contract changes by the FA.

The Athletic claims new terms will drastically impact footballers who become ill or injured.

A National League player who suffers a setback will only get up to 12 weeks of full wages.

They will then be put on “sick pay” of £99.35 per week for just 28 weeks.

Those playing below the National League level would only be entitled to six weeks of full wages before moving on to sick pay.

The new changes will come in from July 1, and players could go on strike as a result.

Oldham’s Peter Clarke said: “A strike sounds very drastic. Is it something we want? I don’t think so.

“Is it something the FA want? I don’t think so either. But is it something that may happen? Quite possibly.

“I think all options have got to be explored. Hopefully the FA and the captain’s group can work this out as amicably as possible.

“But there have been times where strikes have been necessary.

“Mid-to-long term injuries have various impacts, there’s a physical aspect, there’s an emotional aspect because they live for playing games and undoubtedly it’s going to have an effect on individuals mentally.

“We don’t want an added worry that you’re not going to be able to pay bills, that you’re not going to be able to make a mortgage payment.

“The knock-on of this could be catastrophic. If they get a long-term injury players could lose their homes. That’s unacceptable.”

Boreham Wood star Tyrone Marsh blasted the news on Twitter, saying: “This is an absolute shambles @TheVanaramaNL you need to look yourself in the mirror.

“We are humans, who have families to look after not a puppet to entertain, what are you possibly thinking?

“This isn’t ok and will never be ok. Something needs to be done asap…! @PFA.”

And talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara – a former player-manager of National League South side Billericay Town – added: “Just read this and it’s a disgrace.

“@PFA need to take action and protect players in the lower leagues, seen too many players get treated like dog sh** at that level.

“You sign a contract you should honour it regardless of injury, it’s professional league full time @TheVanaramaNL.”
