Keir Starmer paid £67,000 in tax in one year – a lot less than Rishi Sunak

Sir Keir Starmer has published his tax returns, a day after Rishi Sunak did the same.

The Labour leader’s tax statement shows he made capital gains of £85,466 in the financial year 2021/22, compared with nearly £1.6 million made by his Conservative counterpart.

Of the final amount, Mr Starmer paid £23,930 in capital gains tax.

Documents stated that the sum reflected his share of the capital gains when his sister decided to sell a house he had helped her buy.

That was on top of his £126,154 income for being an MP and Leader of the Opposition.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister earned nearly £5 million in the last three years, documents showed.

The Tory leader paid HMRC just over £1 million between the years 2019 and 2022.

Mr Sunak is the first prime minister since David Cameron to publish his tax returns.

The politician, the country’s wealthiest MP, previously said he would do so during his failed leadership campaign against Liz Truss last year.

This morning, Huffington Post UK revealed Sir Keir was expected to also publish his tax returns.

Answering questions after giving a speech in Stoke-on-Trent, the Labour leader had said: ‘Let me deal with the question on my tax returns.

‘Now the Prime Minister has published his, I will publish mine.

‘I hope to be able to do that later on today, so that’s very straightforward.’

Sir Keir did not directly answer a question on whether the capital gains tax rate should be reformed.

But he did say: ‘I’m glad the Prime Minister has published his tax returns, I think that’s the right thing to do.

‘Others will obviously analyse those returns.’

Mr Sunak’s financial affairs had been under intense scrutiny after it was revealed that his wife, heiress Akshata Murthy, held special non-dom status which allowed her to avoid paying tax on her immense wealth, derived from her billionaire father’s Indian firm, Infosys.

It was also revealed that Mr Sunak held a US green card and filed tax returns in America while he was serving as Chancellor.

Following a public backlash Ms Murthy later renounced her non-dom status and said she would pay UK tax on her fortune, which she claimed was to stop the issue from acting as a ‘distraction for her husband’.

Mr Sunak and his wife are estimated to have a combined fortune of around £730m.
