Shelton PD: Woman arrested after fleeing police following fight, robbery at Walmart

A Bridgeport woman is facing robbery charges after fleeing from police following a fight at a Shelton Walmart, police said.

The Shelton Police Department was called to the Walmart at 465 Bridgeport Ave. for a report of a fight on Wednesday. Officers learned that the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Keyarra Burnett-Johnson, allegedly attempted to leave the store with a shopping cart full of merchandise without paying. Police said Burnett-Johnson was accompanied by two female juveniles.

According to police, when the store’s loss prevention staff questioned Burnett-Johnson about the merchandise, she allegedly began to yell and spit at them. She also reportedly struck a Walmart employee with a curtain rod, police said.

A Walmart employee told police he dropped his phone during the altercation; the phone was reportedly taken by Burnett-Johnson. She and the two juveniles then fled the store in a Jeep Cherokee, police said.

The Walmart employee sustained minor injuries during the assault, according to police.

Police said witnesses recorded the vehicle and its license plate. Patrol officers reportedly located the Jeep on Bridgeport Avenue and attempted to make a stop before the vehicle was driven onto Route 8 at a high rate of speed, according to police.

The Walmart employee was able to GPS track his phone, which showed it was at a residential address in Bridgeport. Bridgeport officers went to the address and located the vehicle along with Burnett-Johnson and the two juveniles. It was then that police learned Burnett-Johnson does not possess a driver’s license.

Burnett-Johnson was arrested and charged with third-degree robbery, two counts of risk of injury to a child, engaging police in a pursuit and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

She was released on a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court in Derby on Thursday.
