Experts PureSalt have developed a simple hack to remove wine stains from carpets using salt, which goes as low as 65p in supermarkets after a study found that Brits endure 100 drink spillages a year.
Red wine contains tannins which can be found in red grapes used to make the beverage and stains anything that it touches, which is why it is hard to remove from the fibres of a carpet or piece of clothing.
As soon as red wine spills on your carpet, get to quick work to remove the stain; the longer the spillage remains on the surface, the harder it is to remove. Salt will absorb the wine and lift the colour away from the surface.
As a third of UK adults (32 per cent) prefer to drink wine over any other alcoholic drink, this affordable hack will save wine drinkers from spending an average of £100 to have a professional cleaner remove the stain.
Here the experts share the simple seven step method for instantly removing red wine from any carpet.
- Use a paper towel or cloth to absorb as much red wine from the carpet as possible
- Remove the towel or cloth and dab some cold water over the stain
- Cover the stained area with salt until the red wine is barely visible
- Let it sit for 5 mins to absorb the stain (If you have a more stubborn stain, leave the salt on for several hours or overnight)
- After waiting, rinse the spot with cold water
- If you are handling clothing, you can use laundry detergent when rinsing the stain
- Once the salt dries, simply vacuum or brush the surface, repeat if necessary.
