Pochettino open to return to Tottenham management job
Mauricio Pochettino could return for a second stint as Tottenham manager, according to the club’s former head of player development, David Webb.
The Argentine has been one of the names closely linked with the club ever since current manager Antonio Conte’s furious rant against the players and the club’s hierarchy.
Conte has spoken out against club
Conte had slammed his players for being selfish after his side threw away a 3-1 lead to concede two goals in the last 15 minutes to end the game 3-3 against Southampton in the Premier League.
The Italian manager also criticized the club’s management and blamed them for not winning anything in the last 20 years.
It is widely believed that it is just a matter of time before Conte will be shown the door, and the search for a new manager is already in place.
Pochettino may have other options
In an interview with Sun Sport, Webb, who worked with Pochettino during his time from 2015-17 for the north London club said, “I don’t think that Poch wants to pigeon-hole himself solely to the Premier League.
If a good offer were to come up in Spain or Germany, he’d be open to that, too. But the Premier League will always be his first choice. He was phenomenal at Tottenham — and would be open to it again.”
Webb, however, also mentioned that he is unaware of Pochettino’s relationship with club Chairman Daniel Levy, the 61-year-old who takes all the crucial decisions for Spurs.
Webb said, “I don’t know the ins-and-outs of how fractured Poch’s relationship is with Daniel.”
Pochettino had a very successful stint for Spurs when he led them to the Champions League final but was sacked in November 2019 after a poor start to the season. The Argentine took up the reins at PSG but has been out of a job after leaving the French giants last summer.
Webb also mentioned that should Pochettino return to his former club; he could sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfred Zaha, “I know Poch was a big fan of his. I still think he’s attractive for a couple of years because he’s still got great attributes for the Premier League.”
It will be interesting to see if Pochettino does return to London for a second spell or if it would any of the other names being linked to the job, such as Julian Nagelsmann, Marco Silva, and Ange Postecoglou.
