The rewards may have been sweeter because of the hard work. Whatever the inspiration, a pair of Clayton, Mich., teens spent early spring in the chilly woods tapping maple trees for sugary sap in 1982. Once collected, they hauled buckets back to a huge homemade boiler to thicken the sap into syrup.
