MET Office forecasters have released a yellow warning for wind today – and it’s going to get worse with a rain alert tomorrow.
Weather experts say that people in southern England and Wales should expect transport delays as strong winds blow from 9pm today until midday tomorrow.
Storm Mathis, named by Météo-France, will see March “go out like a lion” with wet and windy weather predicted from tonight until Friday.
The warning reads: “Strong winds may affect parts of southern England and south Wales during Thursday evening and Friday morning.
“Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely.
“Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.
“Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely.”
The Met Office added: “A deep area of low pressure is expected to move eastwards across southern Britain during Thursday evening and Friday morning, bringing spells of strong southerly winds, then a lull, followed by strong west or northwesterly winds.
“There is uncertainty over the track and depth of the low and this affects how strong the wind will be.

“It is likely that coastal areas will see 50-60 mph gusts, with a low probability of 70 mph over exposed hills and headlands with winds probably peaking after they veer west or northwesterly.
“This could lead to some disruption in places.
“Along with the strong winds, we will also see heavy rain overnight clearing as the low progresses eastwards.”
But the weather is set to get even worse tomorrow, with forecasters predicting heavy rain from 6am until 6pm in the south west of England.
About 15-25mm of rain is set to fall “fairly widely” over the region, with a chance of standing water and some flooding.
The Met Office said: “Heavy rain leading to some travel disruption and a chance of some flooding in a few places.
“Bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer.
“Spray, standing water and some flooding on roads probably making journey times longer.
“Following recent wet weather, further rain is expected on Thursday night and through Friday.
“This will be persistent and, at times, heavy with 15-25mm of rain fairly widely across Devon and Cornwall.
“These accumulations are likely to bring areas of standing water and the chance of some flooding on Friday.
“The rain is likely to slowly ease during Friday evening.”
It comes after the Met Office revealed its first forecast for the Easter long weekend.
Weather experts unveiled their long-range forecast for the weekend between Good Friday on April 7 and the Easter Bank Holiday on April 10.
