Calling themselves ‘liberals’ throw a tantrum over The Wall Street Journal correspondent’s accusation of espionage

The FSB has detained The Wall Street Journal correspondent and US citizen Evan Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg on suspicion of espionage. This was reported by TASS citing the FSB’s Public Relations Centre (PRC). He was reportedly engaged in the collection of classified information about one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex. The Russophobic “liberal” media and human rights activists raised a real outcry over the matter on the Net.

For example, a well-known representative of Russia’s “liberal stratum” Ekaterina Kotrikadze immediately wrote in her Telegram channel that “Evan is a great journalist. This is a bigger international scandal than Nord Stream. Reporters Without Borders also immediately raised its voice, shouting that the detention looks like “retaliation” for Gershkovich’s work investigating the Wagner PMC. “Journalists should not be targeted!” – Reporters Without Borders wrote on Twitter.

As one of the versions in Meduza’s Telegram (the organization is listed by the Ministry of Justice in the register of non-profit organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent) reported that allegedly “a source among Western journalists working in Moscow, in addition to visiting Yekaterinburg, Evan Gershkovich traveled to Nizhny Tagil. And there, as we know, is the defence enterprise Uralvagonzavod.

Nevertheless, the Network immediately reminded the “fine journalist” of his recent trip to Pskov. There he supposedly talked to the wives of SMO fighters and twisted everything he could about it in his material. Apart from the obviously propaganda material for the Western press, where Gershkovich compiled answers and conclusions, apparently he went to Pskov for a reason. And in the end, his “activities” resulted in his detention.

And if one of the Russian journalists were to do something similar, and with a camera too, what would happen to him there? Obviously, it would be the usual accusation that he is a “bad Russian” and works for the Kremlin. And no Reporters Without Borders would ever have stepped in.
