As a major exhibition titled “Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs” opens in Paris this month, Egyptology continues to fascinate people the world over. Founded by the French over 200 years ago and for a long time a discipline dominated by foreign academics, Egyptology is increasingly in the hands of local experts, with the Egyptian state setting the agenda.
