Journalist provides exciting James Maddison to Tottenham transfer news

Tottenham Hotspur look to have the upper hand over Newcastle United in the race for James Maddison, according to The Daily Mail’s North-East football correspondent, Craig Hope.

Maddison, who is set to enter the final year of his contract this June, is expected to leave the King Power Stadium this summer, with The Telegraph reporting on Wednesday that Leicester have slapped a £50m price tag on the attacking midfielder.

The report added that the England international has been a ‘long-term target’ for Spurs, who are keen to add a creative midfielder to their squad.

However, it was suggested that the Lilywhites are expected to face competition for Maddison’s signature from Premier League rivals as well as from abroad.

It looks like the main competition could come from Newcastle, with Football Insider claiming on April 2 that Eddie Howe had made the Leicester star his top summer target.

The publication asserted that the Magpies have already started laying the groundwork on a summer deal for Maddison.

However, Hope believes that the 26-year-old is more likely to end up at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than St James’ Park.

The journalist told Sky Sports News’ Hold the Back Page segment (5/4/23 – 22:35): “I don’t expect James Maddison to go to Newcastle now, the noises I’m hearing, he will be going to Tottenham.”

While it is common knowledge that Maddison has been a long-term target for Tottenham, I am not sure how we would be able to work on the deal without any clarity on who our manager (or director of football) would be next season.

The 26-year-old might not be too keen to come to Spurs without any knowledge of which manager he would be playing for.

It is also far from certain that we would be in next season’s Champions League, which would likely influence Maddison’s decision.
