Biden Admin Blames Former President Trump for Chaotic Withdrawal from Afghanistan
The administration of Joe Biden has defended its decision to withdraw American soldiers from Afghanistan and accused former US President Donald Trump of fostering circumstances that “severely constrained” his successor and caused the chaotic pullout from the war-torn country in 2021.
On Thursday, the White House released a 12-page report on the circumstances behind the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. It also forwarded related classified documents to various Congressional committees.
The report attributes a large portion of the fault to the previous Trump administration, claiming that President Biden was “severely constrained” by their decisions.
On February 29, 2020, the Taliban and the US administration, led by then-President Trump, signed a peace accord in Doha, Qatar. The treaty paved the way for the withdrawal of American troops within one and a half years from the country. In return, the Taliban pledged not to attack or utilize Afghanistan’s soil against the United States or its allies.
US President Joe Biden ended America’s longest-running overseas military engagement in Afghanistan on April 14, 2021.
After the US withdrawal announcement plan from the country, the Taliban fighters increased their attacks on the provincial capitals. On August 15, they seized Kabul capital of Afghanistan, without any resistance, and former president Ashraf Ghani fled to Uzbekistan on the same day.
After the Taliban takeover of the country, the US and its allies ended their two-decade presence there.
Since then, no country has recognized the Taliban regime, including the US. The Taliban authorities introduced suppressive policies, including restrictions on women’s education and worked with domestic and international organizations amid a dire humanitarian crisis in the country.
