No one, not even a former president with the support of his political party, is above the law
After being presented with troves of evidence, a grand jury of everyday Americans in New York City indicted twice-impeached Donald Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree in order to influence the 2016 election.
Even as he potentially faces charges for illegally interfering in the 2020 election, the criminal legal system is already treating him with the dignity and respect that is denied to too many others. Instead of being imprisoned at New York's notoriously dangerous Rikers Island jail for days, months, or even years because he couldn't afford bail while awaiting trial or because the paperwork got lost, after this arraignment he immediately returned to his South Florida resort and promptly held a rally.
"As he stands accused of deliberately and illegally influencing our elections," advocacy organization Common Cause writes, "Donald Trump gets private planes, penthouse overnights, and motorcades ...Yet just miles away from Trump’s resort last fall, Black Florida residents were yanked out of bed in the middle of the night without time to get dressed, then taken to jail at gunpoint—all for the ‘crime’ of not realizing they were ineligible to vote. It’s an egregious, racist, and humiliating double standard."
The law must apply to everyone. Federal and state prosecutors must follow the evidence, expose Trump and MAGA Republicans for their efforts to overturn the will of American voters, and hold them accountable for their crimes.
