India's Union Law Minister, Kiren Rijiju, stated that changes to the definition of fake news, false news, and misrepresentation require extensive deliberation. Rijiju said certain amendments in the election process are being considered but could not make any commitments. Although the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules 2023 to identify fake, false, or misleading content have been notified, the ministry is still consulting on the issue. Rijiju added that he could not announce the date for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls.
