Now an expert in the home decor field – interior designer Kelly Hoppen – has shared how countless people get it wrong when it comes to painting, which results in their property looking outdated and old-fashioned.
But the good news is that Kelly has revealed the easy way to fix this, which will ensure your space looks “seamless” and sophisticated in no time at all.
In a video posted to her TikTok account @kellyhoppen, Kelly lifted the lid on the common error – and why she’s determined to put it right.
She explained: “People always ask me every week, should I paint the walls, the skirting board, the doors, the ceilings in two different colours – say grey and white – or should it always be the same?”
Kelly then answered the painting predicament, as she said: “Always in the same!”
Kelly continued to her 72.7k followers that the two-tone look is not on trend in her eyes.
She explained: “It’s really old fashioned to pick things out in white.
“Especially in small spaces – if you paint it all one colour, and I’m not talking dark colours, I’m talking beautiful, neutral colours, it will give you the illusion of space, height and everything will flow.”
Emphasising her point further, she added: “Think about a corridor – lots of doors, architraves, skirting boards.
“If you start picking those out in a different colour, your brain is going to be [in overdrive].”
Instead, Kelly said that one neutral colour would be the only way forward.
She said: “You want to walk in and everything should feel seamless – and that’s why it should always be the same colour.”
And it seems she’s in good company, as other interior pros and fans were in total agreement.
One wrote in the comment section of the video: “Agreed.
“I’ve been a decorator for 35 years and I cringe every time I have to pick things out.”
Another added: “I bought a house and painted every wall, ceiling, skirting board, door, door frame the same white.
“Saved having lots of paint left and looked clean and bright.”
While a third person commented: “I have been doing this for years and absolutely love it.”
And a fourth said: “This lady has always been, is and always will be the queen of interior design – no-one comes near.”
