Klay Thompson becomes third NBA player to reach 300 3-pointers in a season
PORTLAND — Klay Thompson was made aware after the Warriors’ win over the Kings on Friday how close he was to reaching 300 3-pointers in a season for the first time.
He needed just five makes from deep, with only one game left in the regular season.
“That’s be awesome,” Thompson said. “I mean, how many guys have done that in the history of the game?” I’m not going to really shoot for it.”
He paused.
“Well, I am going to shoot for it,” he said with a smile.
And that’s what he did Sunday — and in a hurry, too.
Playing in front of a dozen or more friends and family, Thompson buried five 3-pointers in the opening five minutes of Sunday’s game against the Trail Blazers, making him only the third player in NBA history to make 300 in a season. Thompson joined Stephen Curry, who’s done it four times, and James Harden, who’s done it once.
Thompson has been on a tear as of late. Sunday marked the seventh straight game he’s knocked down at least five 3s, tying the fourth-longest streak in NBA history, according to the Warriors.
Thompson had 17 points on 6 of 8 shooting (5 of 7 from beyond the arc) before he checked out at the 6:59 mark of the first quarter.
