Eight bodies found in tourism hotspot Cancun after ex-cop warned it’s ‘most dangerous time ever to travel to Mexico’
EIGHT bodies have been located at a popular tourist resort in Mexico.
Authorities announced on Tuesday that they are working to identify the remains found in Cancun.
The grim discovery came as police officers launched a search over the weekend for missing people.
Over 112,000 people are listed as missing throughout Mexico.
Drug cartels often dump a number of bodies at secret sites in order to dispose of evidence, however, the Caribbean resort rarely sees such grisly findings.
But, as rival gangs fight for territory and control of the coastline, such instances are thought to increase in the previously considered safe travel zone.
Oscar Montes de Oca, the head prosecutor of the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo revealed where the bodies were located.
Five of the remains were found at an abandoned construction site and three of those have been identified as people who had been reported missing.
Montes de Oca revealed that three sets of skeletal remains were found in a wooded area on the outskirts of Cancun and are yet to be identified.
They were located in a poor neighborhood, roughly 10 miles from the beach and hotel area, near the airport.
It is thought that the bodies had been dumped between one week and two months ago.
Regular searches across the country are launched as volunteers, relatives of missing people, and dogs assist investigators.
With the resort named as the top destination for Americans to travel to in Mexico, the increased violence has seen one cop issue a warning.
Just earlier this month, four people were found dead near a hotel in Cancun in relation to drug gang activity.
It came after four Americans were kidnapped in the border city in March, sparking huge safety fears.
Michael Alcazar, a former New York Police Department detective, suggested Americans thinking about traveling to Mexico should reconsider their plans.
He warned: “Right now, it seems the most dangerous time [ever] to travel to Mexico.
“The Mexican Government doesn’t have any control over what’s happening with the cartels. The cartels seem to be running riot.”
