BLOG: Much more than bricks and mortar

Interim Director of Housing Zulfiqar Mulak explains how Liverpool City Council is  transforming its housing offer to put people at the centre.

Liverpool is already recognised as the best place to live in the north west. Our job is to make sure that every resident benefits from everything the city has to offer, with the security of a place to call their own, whatever their circumstances.

Since I started my new role earlier this year, the housing department has set about resetting its approach in a number of key areas. We want to:

• Prevent homelessness before it happens, by identifying and supporting at-risk and vulnerable residents

• Reduce the numbers of people living in temporary accommodation

• Increase the supply of affordable housing, with20 per cent of all new housing developments being in that category

• Improve how we work with housing providers to ensurethat private landlords are adding housing capacity into the system

• Improve resident engagementto ensure we deliver services to all sections of the community. 

By transforming our approach to housing services, we’ll be delivering on our commitment to enable everyone in our diverse communities to live happy, secure, independent lives.

And by taking our services to the heart of local communities and working with our partners we’ll place local people at the centre of service delivery.
