When is the coronation bank holiday?
The coronation bank holiday falls on Monday, May 8, 2023 – two days after the King is crowned at Westminster Abbey.
This tradition is carried forward from when the UK was given a day off when the late Queen was coronated in 1953.
Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden said: “The Coronation combines the sacred and the solemn but it is also celebratory.
“This bank holiday will once again give people across the United Kingdom the opportunity to come together as families and communities to welcome His Majesty to the throne as we mark this important day in our nation’s long history.”
The coronation itself will be televised by the BBC and a worldwide audience of hundreds of millions is expected to watch.
How many bank holidays do we get in 2023?
In 2023, we’ll get a total of nine Bank Holidays.
This is one less than we got in 2022, as the government declared an extra Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday on June 3 and another for the Queen’s funeral on September 19.
The nine Bank Holidays for 2023 include:

- April 7, 2023 – Good Friday
- April 10, 2023 – Easter Monday
- May 1, 2023 – Early May bank holiday
- May 8, 2023 – Bank holiday for the coronation of King Charles III

- August 28, 2023 – Summer bank holiday
- December 25, 2023 – Christmas Day
- December 26, 2023 – Boxing Day
What date is King Charles’ coronation?
King Charles’ coronation ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
His Majesty’s coronation in Westminster Abbey will be almost 70 years after his mother the Queen was crowned.
The late Queen’s coronation took place on June 2, 1953 – over a year after she ascended to the throne following the death of her father King George VI.
Sources have claimed that the ceremony will be shorter, smaller and less expensive than that of the Queen‘s.
