Who is Matt Wells? Ryan Mason’s number two who was in the Spurs academy
Matt Wells has returned to Hotspur Way after four years to serve as acting assistant head coach to Ryan Mason until the end of the season.
Tottenham confirmed on Tuesday that Wells would serve as Mason’s number two while current academy coach Nigel Gibbs will also join his staff along with Perry Suckling, who will be the goalkeeping coach.
Gianni Vio, who joined as the club’s set pieces coach last summer, is expected to continue in his role.
Who is Wells?
Wells spent 11 years in Tottenham’s academy as a player after joining at the age of nine but did not manage to break into the club’s first team.
After being hampered by injuries early in his career, he turned his attention to coaching and has not looked back since, serving as an assistant to Tottenham’s Under-23s and Under-18s before taking over as the manager for the latter.
Scott Parker noticed his talent when coaching in the club’s academy and he lured him to Fulham back in 2019 before Wells followed him to Bournemouth, where he served as Parker’s assistant.
The 34-year-old was also Parker’s number two at Club Brugge but was sacked alongside the former Tottenham midfielder in March.
He has now returned to Hotspur Way after four years away from the club to assist Mason with first-team duties. Interestingly, he is also the grandson of Spurs legend Cliff Jones.

Wells’ experience will certainly come in handy for Mason, who needs all the help that he can get over the coming weeks.
We can expect the 31-year-old to take the handbrakes off for Thursday’s game and let us hope that change helps inspire a performance out of the squad.
