Sports briefs: Redwood rides big eighth inning to victory

The Redwood High softball team had to work extra innings for the second time this week, but prevailed again thanks to a six-run explosion in the top of the eighth inning of an 8-2 victory against Novato on Wednesday.

Gia Meyers delivered the big hit, a two-run double to put the Giants (14-4-1, 10-2 MCAL) ahead 4-2. Ashley Weingart, Addison Dunn and Kaela Sparler provided RBIs as the Giants put the game out of reach.

Novato (10-11, 3-9) forced extra inning on a triple by Tiana Knight followed by two-out single by Brooke Younkin.

Redwood was led by Maddie Sofnas and Elle McElreath with three hits apiece. Dunn, McElreath and Meyers drove in two runs apiece.

Stella Belluomini and Georgia Pineda combined to allow four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.

Younkin scattered hits until the eighth inning but only four of the eight runs were earned.

  • Selena Pena allowed five hits and struck out eight to register the complete-game shutout in a 4-0 win against Tam. The Wildcats (11-5, 8-4) got two hits from Gracyn Lovette and RBIs from Lauren Osheroff and Lindsay Harrison to secure the victory. Tam pitcher Ava Lee allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out six in the loss. Simone George had three hits for the Red-tailed Hawks (8-9, 6-6).
  • Sophia Everett and Gabby Rodriguez had three RBIs apiece as San Rafael stayed tied for first place with Redwood following a victory against Terra Linda. The Bulldogs (14-5, 10-2) host the Giants on Monday.

Boys golf

Charlie Hansen shot a two-over-par 38 at Peacock Gap on Wednesday, helping Marin Academy edge University 1660168 to cap an undefeated regular season with a league title. Charlie Wilhelm carded a 39 for the Wildcats (10-0, 8-0 BCL West).

Boys tennis

Fifth-seeded San Domenico bowed out in the semifinals of the BCL West tournament, falling 7-0 against top seed University on Wednesday.

Boys soccer

San Rafael High standout Norman Tellez has committed to continue his playing career at Dominican University next year. Tellez was an all-MCAL first team selection during his senior season after being a second teamer as a junior.

Girls volleyball

Setter Ruby Kuerschner committed to continue her playing career at Lewis and Clark University next season. Kuerschner secured honorable mention all-league honors last season in the MCAL — a league stacked with top-flight setters.
