Pakistan Says Fencing On Durand Line Completed by 98 Percent

Ahmed Sharif, the director general of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said 98% of the Durand Line fencing has already been installed. 

With this action, Pakistani authorities hope to stop “terrorists” from entering from Afghanistan to Pakistan. The fencing will span the entire 2,611 km length of the Durand Line, which separates Pakistan from Afghanistan.

However, the Taliban authorities said that the residents of the two sides of the Durand Line disagree about installing the fencing.

 “The fencing was not begun during the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and is no longer ongoing. Of course, we want relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan to be good and commuting across should continue,” said Zabiullah Mujahid, Senior spokesperson of the de facto government. 

Amir Abdur Rahman, the Afghan monarch at the time, and British civil official Sir Henry Mortimer Durand signed a boundary demarcation agreement that has divided families into both sides and has been a source of contention between Afghanistan and Pakistan for more than a century. Due to the border’s complexity, it has generated controversy.

The border has frequently seen fights break out, and Pakistan has debated its national security and made many attempts to erect the fence on its own.

According to Sharif, the matter is currently the subject of continuing negotiations with Afghanistan. He continued by stating that a one-sided border cannot be managed; a two-sided border must be managed.
