‘Violent’ man beat and robbed lone pensioner on Christmas morning
A criminal who robbed an elderly man on Christmas Day has been jailed for 13 years.
Jonathan Ashton, 35, was jailed earlier this week on top of a prison sentence he is already serving for robbery and firearms offences.
At around 10:50am, Ashton knocked on the door of a man in his 60s living in Handsworth, Sheffield, and forced his way into his home.
The pensioner, who was home alone on Christmas morning, tried to fight back against the intruder only for Ashton to ‘violently and repeatedly punch’ him.
He suffered blows to the body and head before managing to escape, with his head injuries requiring hospital treatment.
Detective Constable John Briers said: ‘Ashton’s behaviour was calculated and violent.
‘He went to that property with the intention of stealing and causing harm to whomever got in his way.’
Investigators pinned Ashton down after examining CCTV footage in the local area, as well as a witness who heard the ‘commotion’ at the victim’s house and saw Ashton fleeing the scene.
‘We were able to present a comprehensive case to the court and I am pleased he has received a further, lengthy custodial sentence for his crimes that day,’ Briers added.
Ashton, who is behind bars at HMP Marshgate in Doncaster, appeared before Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.
A judge handed down a 13-year-and-a-half prison sentence, which he will serve concurrently with his existing jail term.
