Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said she replaced a Cabinet member who oversaw the state’s award-winning prekindergarten program because of a teacher training book with language about inclusion and combatting structural racism. The Republican governor announced last week that she was replacing Barbara Cooper as head of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education over the use of the book written by a nationally recognized group. Ivey told reporters that educators need to focus on classroom basics. “The teacher resource book that I looked at had all those references to different kind of lifestyles and equity and this and that and the other,” Ivey told reporters.
