It’s Cinco de Mayo you say? OK, forget that Highway 4 construction work
Someone forgot Friday was Cinco de Mayo. But when it dawned on Caltrans officials, they decided to postpone the overnight closure of State Route 4 in Brentwood originally set for Friday through Saturday.
The delay is “due to safety concerns regarding potential driver behavior late Friday evening — on Cinco de Mayo — and into early Saturday morning,” Linsey Willis, director of external affairs for the Contra Costa Transportation Authority, said in an email.
The construction work to connect two sides of the pedestrian/bicycle Mokeleumne Trail bridge over State Route 4 will be delayed one week and take place on May 12 instead, Willis said.
The overcrossing, located south of Lone Tree Way and north of Sand Creek Road, will connect the two sections of the Mokelumne Trail that were separated by the expansion of Highway 4 in the early 2000s.
Weather permitting, the freeway between Lone Tree Way and Sand Creek Road will be closed in both directions between midnight May 12 until 6 a.m. May 13, according to Caltrans officials.
Detours will be in place to reroute drivers around the closure and are planned as follows:
Eastbound traffic will be directed to exit at Lone Tree Way, go eastbound to Shady Willow Lane, then southbound to Sand Creek Road, before proceeding westbound on Sand Creek Road to the eastbound Highway 4 on-ramp.
Westbound drivers will detour by exiting on Sand Creek Road and going eastbound to Shady Willow Lane, then northbound on Shady Willow Lane to Lone Tree Way, and proceeding westbound on Lone Tree Way to the westbound Highway 4 on-ramp.
Additional overnight closures also will be needed over the next eight weeks for concrete work on the future Mokelumne Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing, according to Willis.
The project is expected to be completed by late summer or early fall, she said.
