Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers are paying a week's worth of TV writer salaries from their own pockets during the strike

  • Late-night hosts Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon will pay staff themselves for a week of the strike.
  • NBC is also paying staff for two weeks during this time, a source close to the shows confirmed to Insider.
  • The writers' strike went into effect on May 2 after their contract expired without a new deal.

Late-night hosts Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon — whose shows are among those on pause during the ongoing Hollywood writers' strike — have expressed support for their staff, and will personally pay them for a week.

NBC, the network that runs both those shows, will provide two weeks of pay to staff during the strike, while Meyers and Fallon will themselves pay for the third week, a source close to the shows confirmed to Insider.

Staff will also receive health care coverage during the coming months through September, according to the source. The Hollywood Reporter previously reported the development.

Television and movie writers in the Writers Guild of America had voted last month to authorize a strike, a move that signaled they would likely walk out if they couldn't reach a deal with the studios and streaming services they were negotiating with.

The writers have highlighted issues over pay in the evolving streaming landscape, job security, and guardrails around the use of artificial intelligence in producing scripts.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the group negotiating on behalf of studios like Paramount and NBC Universal, and streaming services including Netflix, previously told Insider that they had offered "generous increases in compensation for writers as well as improvements in streaming residuals."

The WGA and AMPTP did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment ahead of publication.

Jimmy Fallon drew scrutiny earlier this week when Sarah Kobos, a worker on "The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon," tweeted that he'd missed a staff meeting earlier in the week when the strike kicked off. Kobos then tweeted on Wednesday that Fallon had joined their meeting that day, expressing affirmation of his support for the staff.

Fallon himself has expressed support for the striking workers, saying at a Met Gala interview on Monday that "I need my writers, I need them real bad," according to a video clip posted by ET Canada.

Seth Meyers had also previously shared a similarly supportive message on his show, "Late Night with Seth Meyers," saying, "I'm incredibly grateful that there are negotiators on both sides, sitting and talking."

"I also feel very strongly that what the writers are asking for is not unreasonable," he added.

Representatives for CBS, which airs "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and for ABC, which broadcasts "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" did not immediately comment.

Colbert had also expressed support for his writers on his show, saying "I'm a member of the guild, I support collective bargaining."
