Two Norwich schools put in lockdown after shots fired report
Two Norwich schools were put into lockdown Thursday after police received the report of shots being fired in the area.
The Norwich Police Department responded to a report of shots fired on Sullivan Drive around 12:12 p.m. on Thursday. The person who reported the incident told police a single shot was fired near him in a nearby wooded area. He stated that after hearing the shot, he ran home and called 911 to report someone knocking on his door, according to police.
The lockdowns were implemented at Global Studies Magnet Middle School and Stanton Elementary School at about 12:13 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution,” Superintendent of Norwich Public Schools Kristen Stringfellow said in a statement to parents.
“The Norwich police have advised both schools to lock down and are sending a heavy police presence to both schools,” Stringfellow said.
The lockdown was later lifted in the afternoon hours after officers checked the area thoroughly, police said.
No person was injured in the incident and no suspects were located, police said. At this time, there is no description of the suspect, according to police.
