CT fugitive accused of fatal shooting, armed robbery and firing at detectives found hiding in Bridgeport attic

A fugitive wanted for a slew of crimes in Connecticut, including a fatal shooting in New Haven and two incidents in West Haven in which he allegedly committed a robbery in January and shot at detectives several days later, was taken into custody in Bridgeport on Thursday.

Authorities found Omar Nelson, 22, hiding in an attic under some insulation at a residence in the 500 block of East Main Street in Bridgeport, according to the Connecticut U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force. The task force worked with multiple other police departments, including those from Bridgeport, Norwalk and West Haven, in apprehending the fugitive.

Nelson was wanted in connection with 10 arrest warrants from various police departments, officials said.

The U.S. Marshals Service said Nelson allegedly shot and killed a man on Jan. 4 in the 1400 block of Chapel Street in New Haven. Police responded there at about 9:30 p.m. and found 30-year-old New Haven resident Kentel Robinson suffering from a gunshot wound.

Robinson was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead three days later, according to the New Haven Police Department.

Nelson has also been accused of robbing a vape shop at gunpoint in West Haven on Jan. 7. Three days later, as detectives from West Haven were attempting to take him into custody, he allegedly shot at them, the U.S. Marshals Service said.

Following his apprehension Thursday, Nelson, a convicted felon, was turned over to New Haven police and charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit. He was arraigned in New Haven Superior Court and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

Among the other police departments that have warrants for Nelson’s arrest are Bridgeport police, who are expected to charge him with second-degree strangulation, third-degree assault, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree reckless endangerment and violation of probation.

West Haven police are expected to charge Nelson with armed robbery and criminal attempt to commit assault with a weapon, officials said.
