Danielle Smith narrowly won the leadership of the United Conservative Party on a platform seeking greater autonomy for Alberta. Building on Jason Kenney’s Fair Deal Panel, Smith’s platform included the contentious Alberta Sovereignty Act. Later amended to read “Within a United Canada,” that proposal was widely panned by other leadership candidates and several prominent conservatives, federally and provincially.
