Opinion: Tottenham player ratings from the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa
Tottenham Hotspur lost their European six-pointer this afternoon against Aston Villa, falling to a 2-1 defeat away from home. Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:
Fraser Forster – 5 – Could have got a stronger hand to Aston Villa’s second goal. Apart from picking the ball out the back of his net, he only had a couple of saves to make really.
Pedro Porro – 4 – Pretty absent at both ends this afternoon. Pushed up high to try and impact the game, which left space in behind down the right. But he didn’t influence the attack to make it worth it.
Emerson Royal – 6 – Some questionable decisions to go to ground at times, but he just about got away with it. Pretty good off the ball, but not accurate enough on it.
Cristian Romero – 6 – Got caught out in the build-up to the early opener and looked erratic at times. Still came up with some excellent defensive challengers, but he just looks a tad bored sometimes.
Clement Lenglet – 4 – The whole appeal of Lenglet is that he is meant to be great at passing out from the back. Passing the ball straight out of play and slicing it behind for a corner out of nothing is not what you want.
Ben Davies – 4 – Boy, did he struggle on the left wing today. He was pushed back for the majority of the match and Aston Villa were really toying with him on that side. They were beating him for fun.
Oliver Skipp – 4 – Another off day for Skippy. Always looks like he’s trying hard, but perhaps too hard at times. It felt like he was a yard off the pace today. Perhaps it is time for Sarr to give him a rest.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 5 – Looks a different player next to a defensive partner in midfield. Bentancur complimented his game so much, but he seems lost without someone to progress the ball.
Heung-min Son – 4 – Struggled to find his shooting boots today, not that it really mattered. The winger spent the majority of the 90 minutes well offside.
Richarlison – 4 – Held the ball up well a few times, but that’s really all I can write. He was an absent member of the team beyond that.
Harry Kane – 7 – Kane was the only glimmer of quality in the starting XI today. Won a penalty, scored the penalty, and picked out some decent balls over the top, albeit for offside runs.
Substitutes:
Dejan Kulusevski – 6 – The end product was severely lacking, but Deki added some much-needed drive and danger to the right side.
Yves Bissouma – 7 – Probably the best player on the pitch for the minutes he played. Considering he has been out for so long, he really got stuck in and was a proper driving force.
Arnaut Danjuma – N/A
Ivan Perisic – N/A
