Pakistan PM Sharif Orders To Arrest Those Involved in Recent Violence
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered the police on Saturday to arrest all protesters who had damaged state properties, including sensitive military installations.
“All available resources, including technological aid and intelligence, are being deployed to chase down these elements. Bringing these people to justice is a test case for the government,” said the premier.
After a court granted Khan bail, he left the courthouse late Friday night and went to Lahore under heavy protection. His arrest in a land fraud case on Tuesday provoked violent protests from his followers, and the Supreme Court declared the arrest “invalid and unlawful” on Thursday.
“On May 9, the corps commander’s house in Lahore was destroyed and burnt to ashes by PTI’s mob,” PM Sharif said during a trip to eastern Lahore city.
“The mob did what our enemies could not do in the 75-year history of the country. Therefore, all those involved in the tragic incident will be given exemplary punishment in accordance with the law and the constitution of this country.”
“Whoever was involved in the incident, including those who incited the mobs, those who were responsible for their abetment, and those who launched the attacks, will be arrested,” he said. “I have told the authorities that this is a now-or-never and do-or-die situation for the state.”
“Those arrested will be tried in anti-terrorism courts,” he said. “I have ordered the courts to remain operational even at night.”
Following his detention by the anti-graft agency, there were violent protests in many places throughout Pakistan. Khan claims he did nothing wrong.
Meanwhile, Reuters reported that social media, particularly Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, were suspended in the country on Saturday after being restored late on Friday.
This has been done based on the order of the authorities to maintain law and order in the country and prevent any agitation once again by the Khan’s supporters.
