The Chinese Armed Forces have accused the US and Canada of deliberate provocation
Shi Yi, an official of the Eastern Zone of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Combat Command, has said that US and Canadian warships that have passed through the Taiwan Straits are provoking an escalation of the crisis in the region. This was reported by RIA Novosti.
The USS Indo-Pacific Command today said a Chinese warship came dangerously close to 150 yards (137 metres) to the US destroyer USS Chung-Hoon during a joint Canada-US mission that follows through the Taiwan Strait. In this regard, Shi Yi claims that the governments of the United States and Canada are deliberately creating crisis situations in the region.
“The countries concerned deliberately artificially create incidents in the Taiwan Strait area, deliberately provoke risks, maliciously undermine regional peace and stability, and send false signals to pro-Taiwan independence forces,” states an official of the PLA Eastern Zone Combat Command.
Shi Yi specifies that the PLA Eastern Zone of Combat Command has formed a force to escort and supervise Western warships. He also stated that the Chinese army is ready to respond to any provocation and take all necessary measures to ensure the security of China’s national sovereignty, as well as to maintain stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
It should be recalled that the Chinese government has previously repeatedly stressed that Beijing is aiming at a peaceful reunification with the mainland, Taiwan. However, according to Chinese Defence Minister Li Shanfu, the PRC would not refuse to use military force against Taipei in the worst case scenario.
